The Renewable Resources Coalition (RRC), a non-profit Alaskan corporation also working to stop development of the Pebble Mine and permanently protect the fishery resources of Bristol Bay, is collecting signatures across the state for clean water voter ballot initiatives. The initiatives were put forward by residents of Bristol Bay and others throughout the State and mandate clean water for salmon. Voter initiatives are the procedure by which the people instead of the legislature introduce and enact a law. A specified number of voters propose the law they wish to be placed on a ballot to have it voted up or down by their fellow Alaskans. [Ref. AS 15.45.010-245]
The two Clean Water Initiatives would protect statewide public interest in water quality by ensuring that Alaska’s waterways, streams, rivers, and lakes are not adversely impacted by new large scale metallic mineral mining operations are compatible with the state’s interest in having clean waters. The two Clean Water Initiatives would help block development of the Pebble Mine and raise the standards of protection for clean water and wild salmon in the state.
