The directors of the United Fishermen of Alaska voted Thursday to oppose development of the Pebble copper and gold prospect in Southwest Alaska as a mine. UFA is a trade group representing 34 commercial fishing groups in Alaska. The Pebble prospect is located in the headwaters of some rivers that drain into Bristol Bay. UFA leaders said Friday they oppose Pebble because of its "sheer size" and its potential impacts to Bristol Bay's sockeye salmon run. "What we are saying about Pebble has no reflection on any other mineral (developments) in Alaska at this point," said Bruce Wallace, UFA's environmental chair. He said the group plans to publish a paper further explaining its Pebble position within two weeks.
