"Wrong mine, wrong place."
That's the message delivered today by 50 fishing and hunting businesses and organizations to First Quantum Minerals, the Canadian mining company currently deciding whether to sign an options agreement with proposed Pebble Mine backer, Northern Dynasty Minerals.
In the letter entities including The Orvis Company, the American Fly Fishing Trade Association, Trout Unlimited, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, American Sportfishing Association, Izaac Walton League, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, dozens of Bristol Bay lodges, and other businesses and organizations representing hundreds of thousands of American hunters and anglers, expressed, "staunch and long-lasting opposition to the proposed Pebble Mine" and to urged First Quantum Minerals to withdraw financial support from the proposed project.
"Together in solidarity, we represent millions of people; those who underestimate this opposition do so at their own risk. Accordingly, we urge First Quantum Minerals to choose not to invest in this mine proposal because of the jobs, culture and salmon it puts at risk."
Today, we thank these organizations for speaking up, and stand with them in opposition to Pebble Mine or any proposal that would jeopardize the clean water, remote landscape, tens of thousands of jobs, and once-in-a-lifetime fishing and hunting opportunity in Bristol Bay, Alaska.
